Ruins of the Near Future

University of Southern California Studio — May 2019

By Thomas Wang

Starting from a drawn field condition, the project’s initial form is shaped from a system of lined grids with solid forms embedded within, dictating the organization of the architecture . This project relates to the compression and expansion of space that are created from the diagonal walls, which starts from a solid piece and fades into a more abstract extension of the wall through the transition to a stick. The walls guides the circulation and cut across the orthogonal grids, which are made from three systems of grids. Along with the circulation of space, the grids created from sticks defuse from a densely packed area to a more open space. With this diffusion, the spaces that inhabitants travel through moves from more horizontal to vertical experience.
